Cleaning your suitcase & looking after your luggage – tips for your travelite product
To ensure your suitcase looks as good as new for a long time and serves you well on your travels, it’s worth looking after it properly. With a few simple steps, your luggage will stay clean, functional and ready for use.
Cleaning your luggage
Cleaning the exterior – gently and effectively
When travelling, dirt can quickly build up on the surface of your suitcase. Here’s how to clean it effectively:
- Clean your suitcase with a soft cloth, warm water and mild soap.
- Make sure the cloth is only slightly damp so that no moisture gets inside.
- For hard-shell suitcases, a dirt eraser is ideal for removing scuff marks or stubborn dirt.
- The handle, telescopic pole, lock and zip should be cleaned thoroughly and carefully, as they are frequently handled
- For stubborn stains, you can carefully use a mild vinegar-based cleaner – it’s best to test it on an inconspicuous area first. On fabric surfaces, you should remove stains as soon as possible to prevent them from becoming permanently embedded in the material.
- Then wipe everything down with a clean, dry cloth.
Handy for when you’re on the go: Disinfectant wipes (alcohol-free) are ideal for frequently touched surfaces such as handles, locks or zips.
Important: Always allow your suitcase to dry completely after cleaning before closing it or storing it away.
Note: Do not use alcohol-based or harsh cleaning agents, abrasive cleaners or bleach, as these can damage materials and surfaces.
Cleaning the interior – hygienically and thoroughly
Dust and dirt also build up inside over time:
- First, remove any dust, crumbs or sand with a vacuum cleaner – ideally using an upholstery nozzle or brush attachment.
- Then wipe the interior with a soft cloth, warm water and mild soap.
- If necessary, you can use a mild vinegar-based cleaner to neutralise odours.
- Avoid vigorous rubbing to preserve the fabric and colours.
- Then dry the interior thoroughly.
Important: Before you close your suitcase again, the interior should be completely dry.
Cleaning the wheels – for smooth and quiet rolling
- Regularly remove hair, dust or small stones from the rollers.
- A small brush or an old toothbrush is ideal for hard-to-reach areas.
- Then wipe the rollers clean with a slightly damp cloth and dry them thoroughly.
Tip: Clean wheels ensure your suitcase rolls more smoothly and quietly.
Cleaning bags and rucksacks – gently and by hand
To ensure your travelite bags and rucksacks look their best for a long time:
- Please do not wash in the washing machine.
- Instead, clean bags and rucksacks by hand using a soft cloth, mild soap and, if necessary, a little vinegar-based cleaner.
Important: Always allow bags and rucksacks to dry completely after cleaning.
Care tips for your luggage
Using the zip correctly
Always open the zip completely right to the end. Make sure that it is not positioned in a curved section when opening it. If you can only open your suitcase by using force, check the position of the zip.
Protection against water and moisture
Your travelite luggage is water-repellent, but not waterproof. Brief contact with moisture is generally not a problem – however, you should protect your luggage in the event of prolonged or heavy exposure to wet conditions.
Damage caused by water is not covered by the warranty.
Storing your suitcase correctly
Store your case in a dry and cool place. Make sure it is completely dry before storing it away.
Tip: After travelling, it’s best to leave your suitcase open for a short while to air it out before stowing it away.
Please note the warranty conditions
Damage caused by improper handling, normal wear and tear or improper use by third parties is not covered by the warranty.
In addition to the statutory warranty, we provide our products with a voluntary manufacturer’s guarantee. You can find information on the duration on the product itself and, for current ranges, on the relevant product page in our travelite online shop. You can find detailed information on our warranty terms and conditionshere.
Warranty and manufacturer’s guarantee
travelite products are covered by both statutory warranty rights and a voluntary manufacturer’s guarantee. Both apply independently of one another.
1. Warranty and manufacturer’s guarantee – what’s the difference?
Statutory warranty
The statutory warranty – also known as liability for defects – applies to the seller from whom you purchased the product. If you bought your product from the travelite online shop, travelite is your seller. If you purchased it from another retailer, that retailer is generally your point of contact and contractual partner for warranty claims. The warranty covers defects that were already present when the product was handed over or whose cause was already inherent in the product at that time.
Voluntary manufacturer’s warranty
The travelite manufacturer’s warranty is a voluntary additional service provided by us as the manufacturer. You can find information about the warranty and our warranty terms and conditions on our products and via the following link: https://www.travelite.com/de/Garantie/. The manufacturer’s warranty does not replace or limit your statutory warranty rights vis-à-vis the seller.
2. Statutory warranty
In the event of a valid, recognised warranty claim, you may initially request that the seller provide subsequent performance. In principle, you may choose between repair and the supply of a replacement product free from defects. The seller may refuse your chosen method of rectification and select an alternative if your original choice is (e.g. technically) impossible or can only be carried out at disproportionate cost. Rectification is free of charge for you and must be carried out within a reasonable period.
Material defects, time limits and proof
Not every fault or damage to a product automatically constitutes a material defect and is therefore a warranty claim. A material defect generally only exists if the product was already defective at the time of handover or if the cause of the fault that arose later was already present in the product at that time. Defects arising, for example, from normal wear and tear, improper use, overloading, dropping, impact, transport or other subsequent external influences are generally not material defects for which the seller is liable under the statutory warranty.
For new goods, statutory claims for defects in Germany generally expire two years after the product has been handed over. The date of handover determines the start of this period. You must provide evidence of this in the form of a proof of purchase, an invoice, an order confirmation or other suitable documentation. If a defect becomes apparent within one year of handover, it is generally presumed in the case of the sale of consumer goods that the defect was already present at the time of handover. However, this presumption does not mean that every defect occurring within this year is automatically covered by the warranty. In particular, it does not apply if the nature of the damage or the goods is incompatible with a defect that was already present at the time of handover. After the first year has elapsed, the customer – that is, you – must, as a general rule, prove that the material defect or its cause was already present at the time of handover.
A fault occurring within the two-year limitation period is only covered by the warranty if it is in fact a material defect that was already present or arose at the time of handover. For purchases made outside Germany, different national time limits and rules regarding the burden of proof may apply.
3. Optional ‘ travelite ’ manufacturer’s warranty
Your product is usually also covered by a voluntary manufacturer’s warranty. You can find information on this on or in the product and at https://www.travelite.com/de/Garantie/. If your damage is covered by the warranty terms, you can claim the specified benefits provided the conditions set out therein are met. To assess a warranty claim, we also require, in particular, proof of the original purchase. If the product was a gift, corresponding proof of purchase is also required.
Depending on the nature and extent of the damage, the product may be repaired or replaced under warranty. If there is no technically feasible or safe repair option, or if the product is no longer available in our range, travelite may instead provide an equivalent replacement product. A repair or replacement under the manufacturer’s warranty does not, as a general rule, result in the warranty period starting afresh or being extended. The original date of purchase remains the determining factor.
A warranty claim does not, as a general rule, give rise to a new statutory warranty period. Your statutory rights vis-à-vis the seller remain unaffected.
4. Examples of damage to luggage, bags and rucksacks
A warranty or guarantee claim may – depending on the cause of the damage and the applicable conditions – arise, for example, in the case of...
- Materials and manufacturing defects,
- zips with functional defects,
- seams that come apart without any external influence,
- defective components or
- the absence of an agreed quality.
The following items, in particular, are generally not included:
- normal wear and tear,
- Normal signs of wear and tear such as scratches, dents and scuffs,
- Damage caused by overloading or improper use (whether by yourself or by third parties),
- Damage caused by drops, knocks and other external impacts, as well as
- Damage caused in transit, for example during air, rail or coach travel.
Whether a claim falls under the warranty or guarantee always depends on the cause of the damage, the condition of the product, the relevant legal provisions and the applicable guarantee terms and conditions.
In a nutshell...
Warranty:
- Statutory rights against the seller. These relate to defects that were already present or had arisen at the time of handover.
Manufacturer’s warranty:
- Voluntary additional service provided by travelite in accordance with the applicable warranty terms and conditions. Statutory rights remain unaffected.
Repairs under warranty:
- The statutory limitation period is extended once by twelve months if the product is actually repaired as part of the subsequent performance.
Replacement under warranty:
- If the remedy takes the form of the provision of a replacement product, the special twelve-month extension does not apply; nor does a new two-year period begin automatically.
Repair or replacement under warranty:
- The warranty period does not, as a general rule, restart. The original date of purchase remains the decisive factor.
