Europe has many beautiful spots. Some are better known, whilst others are virtually unknown. Yet it is precisely these hidden gems that can make a trip so special.
We set out in search of Europe’s hidden gems and discovered four countries that are absolutely worth visiting and promise to create incredible memories. Here’s a look at them:

#1 Slovenia
Roaring waterfalls, the world’s largest stalactites, picturesque landscapes. But also vibrant student towns, a burgeoning food scene and bustling squares. Slovenia offers you the perfect blend of breathtaking nature and magnificent cities. This allows you to add variety to your trip and combine an active holiday in the countryside with the odd city break.
Three places you definitely shouldn’t miss:
1. the capital, Ljubljana, with a glass cable car that takes you up to the castle, creative neighbourhoods buzzing with colourful activity, and impressive façades that transport you back to the 18th century. What we particularly like: the city is absolutely spotless. This is partly because it’s one of Europe’s most sustainable cities counts.
2. Lake Bled, which is arguably the country’s most iconic postcard image. In the middle of a crystal-clear lake lies a small island with a church tower. The view is simply unique and can be enjoyed to the full from the footpath that circles the lake.
3. the Postojna Caves – the second-largest stalactite cave in the world. Take a train ride through the 24-kilometre-long cave system, explore the underground Pivka River and marvel at the wonders of nature.

#2 Albania
A few years ago in Bali, we chatted to a globetrotter who, before our conversation over some delicious peanut butter cups, had already travelled through 18 countries. When we asked her which place she’d liked best, Laura replied straight away: Albania.
At first we were surprised. Simply because the country hadn’t really been on our radar as a holiday destination. But then she told us about the country’s incredible diversity. Of stunning beaches, bays and seaside resorts reminiscent of the Riviera, of villages winding their way up through rolling countryside, of reservoirs in lush national parks, of sweet baklava and of her hike through the Alps.
We asked Laura which three spots were her favourites. She recommended these:

#3 Madeira
Do you love nature? Then Madeira is the perfect place for you. This Portuguese island west of North Africa – right in the middle of the Atlantic – is the place to be if you want to experience tropical gardens, volcanic landscapes and views from some of Europe’s most beautiful cliffs.
If you bump into other holidaymakers here, they’re usually out hiking. That’s because the so-called ‘Flower Island’ is brilliant for it. The great thing is: you don’t need to be a pro. There are walking trails for all levels so you can enjoy the natural beauty. From the spectacular summit hike to Pico Ruivo to leisurely strolls along the levadas – you’re sure to find a route that suits you.
But Madeira has so much more to offer. Don’t miss out on:

#4 Montenegro
Anyone travelling to Montenegro could easily forget that they’re still in Europe. Many cultural influences blend together here, and you’ll experience such a diverse landscape that at times you might think you’re in South America, only to find yourself back in Egypt or even the Middle East the very next moment. Another great thing about it is that you can combine all these experiences on a road trip through the country. The Balkan nation is a manageable size, so it’s definitely worth hiring a car once you’re there.
You really must stop off at the Bay of Kotor, Europe’s southernmost fjord. From here, you can drive along the coast, taking in views of turquoise waters and incredible rock formations, before finally arriving at Sveti Stefan – a former monastery island that’s now a luxury hotel and a popular photo spot. You can find cheaper accommodation that’s just as breathtakingly beautiful in the next town over, Petrovac. Want to do a bit more Hiking in Europe? Then you should head to Lake Skadar, the Tara Gorge (Europe’s deepest gorge) or Durmitor National Park.
